Scope?

The aim of this summer school is to bring PhD students and postdocs together to learn and discuss about ionic liquids and their applications. Ionic liquids are low-melting salts that consist entirely of ions. They possess unique properties like negligible vapor pressure, wide liquidus range (up to 400 °C), high thermal stability, large electrochemical window and intrinsic electrical conductivity. Due to their peculiar properties, they have found applications in fields as diverse as pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, material sciences, nanotechnology, biotechnology, bioremediation and environmental and nuclear sciences. Ionic liquids are interesting for the electrodeposition of reactive metals, as storage medium for reactive gases, electrolytes in Li-ion batteries and Grätzel-type solar cells, or as active components in biosensors. Ionic liquids are also environmentally-friendly alternatives for volatile organic solvents in chemical reactions making chemical processes inherent ly safer. The summer school consists of 15 lectures of 90 minutes each, and 2 lectures of 45 minutes covered different aspects of ionic liquids, ranging from the very fundamentals (preparation, measurement of physicochemical properties, theory) to more applied materials properties and industrial applications. The lecturers are experts in their fields, both from abroad or from KU Leuven. PhD students and postdocs can present their work during the poster session. The summer school will also include social events such as a welcome reception, an excursion and a BBQ.
