Metabolomics and Metabolic Networks

An introductory course for master and PhD students.

September 7-11, 2009 - Summer school

intro.jpgMetabolomics is a newly emerging field of "omics" research and the next corner stone for Systems Biology. While Genomics focuses on the analysis of whole genomes, Transcriptomics on expression analysis, Proteomics and Interactomics on protein expression and interaction, Metabolomics emphasizes the comprehensive characterization of metabolites and small molecules in biological systems.

Metabolomics has the potential of defining cellular processes as it provides an overview of the metabolic status of a cell or organism for a certain physiological state and depicts the global changes of metabolite levels as a response to genetic or environmental modulation. In biomedical research, for instance, metabolite profiling methods are being applied in the quest for the discovery of new disease biomarkers.

The summer school ‘Metabolomics and Metabolic Networks’ is a joined initiative of the Faculty of Science of KU Leuven and the Department of Biotechnology of TU Delft. It brings together experts from the field and aims to provide to master and PhD students an introduction into the technology and methodology. Topics will include sampling methods for dynamic multiparametric metabolite analysis and profiling, data generation, data mining and interpretation, based on case studies in micro-organisms, plants and mammalians.

Programme

  • A detailed overview of the programme
  • Tutors
  • The summerschool counts for 4 ECTS credits. Students can acquire these if they participate in the evaluation and if their home university agrees. KU Leuven students can take the course in their ISP of 2009-2010: G0U29A, if they have the approval of the programme director. In order to obtain the credits the students will every day receive a questionnaire related to the topics discussed during the seminars.
